GET READY FOR A DAY PACKED WITH EVERYTHING HORTICULTURE!

Open to the public, this annual Anoka County Master Gardener event is a day filled with classes led by talented Master Gardeners and Professional educators and complete with an exhibitor fair open throughout the day. 

Keynote speaker Dr. David Zlesak, will begin the day with the opening session “The American Rose Trials for Sustainability (A.R.T.S.) Program and Winning Rose Cultivars”. Dr. Zlesak is a Professor of Horticulture at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls . He has been breeding roses and other plants for adaptation to the upper Midwest since 1984.

Other notable speakers include:

  • What Lurks Under the Waters? Jessica Abarca, Anoka County (AIS) Aquatic Invasive species program Coordinator, presents an overview of different aquatic invasive species that are causing major problems in Minnesota.

  • Lilies: Jewels of the Gardens” by Barbara Ronningen, past recording secretary of the North Star Lily Society, current member of the North American Lily Society Board of Directors and lily grower for over 30 years.

  • Herbs & Spices: For Food and Other Uses” by Shirley Mah Kooyman. Shirley is a botanist with a specialty in plant taxonomy.  She worked at the MN Landscape Arboretum for 25 years and was the Adult Education Manager there for 2 decades.

  • Grapes for the Midwest Home Garden” by Matt Clark, UMN Assistant Professor, Grape Breeding and Enology.

  • Tree Pruning: It Can Be Done Right” by Dave Hanson, Vegetation Management Specialist with MnDOT, an ISA Certified Arborist and Urban Forester.

  • Bye, Bye, deer and Bunnies...  Hello Birds and Butterflies” by Jan Welsh, Wildlife Education Specialist, MN DNR and Anoka Cty Master Gardener.

  • Enjoy Your Garden Indoors—Garden Bouquets to Make and Take” by Tiffany Hammond, AIFD, Forever Floral.

Classes led by Extension Master Gardeners include topics such as: Tips for Photographing your Gardens – Fruits and Berries for Beginner and Advanced Gardeners – Plants that Play Well Under Trees When Grass Won’t – Vigorous Vining Vegetables – More than Seeds; Methods for Plant Propagation – Gardens of the Night – What’s Wrong with My Plant? – Should I Save My Ash Trees or Replace Them?
